Keiichiro Shibuya
Musician. Born in 1973. Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts' Department of Composition.
Keiichiro Shibuya established the ATAK label in 2002. The record label not only releases CDs of cutting-edge electro-acoustic works from around the world, but is also actively working together with various creators on design, network technology, videos, and more.
His first solo album "ATAK000 keiichiro shibuya" with its elaborate composition and rich sounds that focus on tone and rhythm was critiqued as "a masterpiece that incorporates the entire history of electronic music."
Keiichiro Shibuya has been working together on interdisciplinary projects with the composer Yuji Takahashi and complex systems researcher and University of Tokyo professor Takashi Ikegami. At the end of 2005, he announced his collaborative sound installation work with Takashi Ikegami at the ICC (Intercommunication Center) in Tokyo Opera City, as well as his research on changes based on applying nonlinear physics and the musical theory "third term music" while also performing concerts, marking the beginning of a highly active season for him. These activities gained attention as being an authentic interdisciplinary collaboration between music and science.
In 2006, Keiichiro Shibuya unveiled the sound installation "filmachine" at YCAM (Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media), which incorporated three-dimensional stereophonic sounds and LED lights.
The CD version of this music was announced in 2007, entitled "ATAK010 filmachine phonics" and included vertical sound movement, becoming the world's first CD to be specifically made for listening to with headphones. This work led to him receiving the Honorary Mention Award from Ars Electronica in the Digital Music category in 2007.
In 2008, Keiichiro Shibuya brought filmachine to Berlin's major yearly technology art festival transmediale and held a concert there too. At the request of the International Association of Traffic and Safety Sciences, he helped create songs used at pedestrian crosswalks, with tests done at the Ginza 4-chome intersection, creating quite a buzz.
In 2009, Keiichiro Shibuya went through several countries in Europe and Asia on his ATAK NIGHT 4 Tour accompanied by Yasunao Tone, Ryoji Ikeda, and Pansonic, ending the tour in Japan.
In September of the same year, he announced his first piano solo album "ATAK015 for maria."
In 2010, his collaboration album with Soutaiseiriron "Our Music Soutaiseiriron + Keiichiro Shibuya" was announced and reached number 1 on the iTunes music store charts. His other activities include composing music for Shusaku Arakawa's documentary film, being invited to perform at Germany's technology and art festival ISEA 2010 with mum's cellist Hildur Gudnadottir, and directing the music for the drama "Spec" that aired that same October.
Keiichiro Shibuya also serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Tokyo and Tokyo University of the Arts.
