profile
This independent record label was founded in New York in 1992 by Bettina Richards, who previously served as an executive at Atlantic and London Records, and is now run from Chicago. No matter the genre, this label supports its artists' visions and supports them with fair business practices, releasing influential works by local Chicago-based artists, such as Tortoise, The Sea and Cake, Sam Prekop, as well as the band Trans Am, which is active on America's indies scene.
In addition, Oval, Mouse on Mars, Japanese artist Takemura Nobukazu, OOIOO, and others were promptly introduced in America through the label, being supported by fans and journalists of the alternative music scene under the keyword "post-rock." When the 90's band Tortoise gained global popularity, Thrill Jockey became popular as a "Chicago sound" label not only in the United States but also in Europe and Japan, and the wide range of their onboard musicians' musical styles, regardless if they were famous or not, solidified the independent label as one with a trusted quality of music.
