Haruomi Hosono x Goro ITO Love! Bossa Nova Talk

Interview with Haruo Hosono x Goro ITO

"Bossa Nova Songbook 2" -All songs explained by Hitoshi Nakahara-

01. Samba do Aviao

Audition

Antonio Carlos Jobim's 60's work, which celebrates the beautiful scenery of Rio de Janeiro under the window of an airplane. At present, the official name of Rio's Galleon International Airport is Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport, and the monument with the lyrics of this song is displayed at Terminal 2. With the song and performance of naomi & goro, who arrived in Rio after a long journey of nearly 30 hours from Japan, the sound of the cello by Jaquis Morelenbaum, who participated as a guest, evokes poetry.

02. Seu Encanto

Audition

Waltz with a gentle atmosphere goes well with the music of naomi & goro. In the sense of "your charm", this waltz is co-produced by Marcos Valli, a young general of the Bossa Nova Golden Age, with his brother Paul Sergio and his cousin Pingaherho, and the second album of '64 "O Compositor y. Oh Cantor (singer/songwriter)”. The original lyrics are Portuguese, but there are also English lyrics, recorded by Astrud Gilberto and others with the title "The Face I Love". Naomi also sings an English version.

03. Roshinha

Audition

In the work of Jonas Silva, a member of the vocal group Galotos da Rua, who was active in the 40s and 50s, Hozinha is nicknamed the female name Rosa. It was a little-known song until Joan Gilberto covered it on his 1991 album "Joan". By the way, the singer who participated in Gallotus da Rua on behalf of Jonas Silva in 1951 was an unnamed Joan at that time.

04. Coracao Vagabundo

Audition

Caetano Veroso wrote a song in his early twenties and released it through his first album "Domingo" (67) by twin leaders with Gal Costa, a gem full of poetic sentiment. There was also an episode that Jobin won the acclaim, and Joan Gilbert recorded it in "Joan Voice and Guitar" (2000).

05. Super Boots

Audition

The original song that Goro-san wrote and composed, Naomi-san translated in Portuguese, and recorded on the 2004 album "BON BON". For this reprint, the lyrics were renewed with the help of engineer Douda Melo. I think it's a masterpiece that can be the standard number of bossa nova made by Japanese people.

06.Pica-Pau

Audition

Marcia (music from Carnival, older than Samba) was sung by Joan Gilberto at a performance in Japan in 2006 and asked "What's that cute song?" Ari Bajoso's work, which produced many famous songs such as "Aquarera do Brasil (Brazil's watercolor painting)", was recorded by the vocal group Quattro Azes y Eun Klinga in 1942, and Joan himself. It is a very rare song that I have not recorded. The lovely melody is perfect for Naomi's character.

07.Dolphin

Audition

Introduced by Luz Esa of Tamba Trio, a piano trio representing the golden age of Bossa Nova, the first recording was an album "Two people and the sea" (67) released by four Tamba names. From this performance featuring Itamar Asiere's piano, it can be heard that the musicians gathered for this recording have established an ensemble to the stage where they can be called a band in a short period of time.

08. Olha Pro Ceu

Audition

The instrumental version recorded on the English title "Look to the Sky" by Antonio Carlos Jobim (included in the album "Wave" in 1969) is famous. There are surprisingly few vocal version recordings, but the lyrics that describe the scene of the night sky where the stars flicker and the heart of love are beautiful, and there is a feeling that this song will be re-evaluated.

09. Chovendo na Roseira

Audition

Jobim composed for the soundtrack of the USA movie "Adventurer" (70 years), and at that time it was called "Children's Game". After that, the lyrics were drawn to describe the scene of rain falling on the rose garden, and the song became the title. Ellis Regina sang back to Jobim's piano in "Eris & Tom" (1974), and is featured by many singers. The songplay reflects the influence that Jobim received from Debussy's music.

10. Triste

Audition

The meaning is "sadness". Jobin recorded with "The Wave" as an instrumental song along with the eighth song. The vocal versions are Ellis Regina (same album as the 9th song) and Joan Gilberto (1977 album "Amoroso"). The three songs so far have in common that they are songs that Jobim wrote after the heyday of Bossa Nova in Brazil.

11. Minha Saudade

Audition

Composed in the mid-1950s by Joan Donato, a pioneer of bossa nova who is over 70 years old and still active. After that, Joan Gilberto wrote the lyrics, but he did not record it, and it is a song that female singer often sings from Arrais Costa (59) to Lisa Ono. Here, recorded only by naomi & goro, the days of the two people in Rio close with a pleasant finish.

MORE DETAIL

Goro ITO It is a pin batch that he designed himself.

message from GORO ITO

This album was in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from recording to mixing and mastering.
I saw Corcovado Hill every day while I was in Rio. Corcovado has a huge statue of Christ that can be seen from anywhere in the city of Rio. I couldn't actually go because I had no time, but Naomi-chan has climbed. At that time, a photo taken by Naomi from Corcovado was used for the back jacket of "Bossa Nova Songbook 2".
I made a pin badge to commemorate the release, so I thought that it could be worn by a man, so I drew a corcovado on the sneakers.
